Sheffield Music Hub Gala Concert – Hundreds of Young Musicians Playing as One!

This year we held our spectacular sold-out Gala Concert, featuring more than 350 young musicians from our choirs, orchestras and wind bands.

Held at the Octagon Centre, the concert showcased the exceptional young talent we have across the city. From the youngest players taking to the stage for one of their biggest performances yet to experienced members of our senior music groups, it was fantastic to see them all come together as one huge, massed music group.

Iain Teather, Music Leader at Sheffield Music Hub, praised the young people, describing them as "absolutely astounding young musicians."

The Gala Concert only comes around every four years or so and is our flagship event. Bringing together so many young musicians in one place is a really special experience, and it is especially powerful for our younger musicians to perform alongside older players and singers, giving them a glimpse of where their musical journey could take them in the next few years.

One of the highlights of the evening was the three massed pieces: Running Up That Hill, Earth, and a One Day Like This and Hey Jude mashup. It was incredible to see all four choirs, all four orchestras and all three wind bands performing together as one music group.

A special shout-out must also go to conductor and arranger John Lyon. Without John's arranging skills, this concert would not have been possible. Every part was carefully arranged to suit the ability and experience of each music group. This allowed musicians of all ages and stages to excel, while also giving our more advanced players the opportunity to tackle more challenging parts.

Most importantly, we are incredibly proud of our young musicians for rising to the occasion and delivering such a memorable performance. The standard of youth music-making in Sheffield is remarkable, and the Gala Concert was a brilliant reminder of the talent, dedication and enthusiasm of the city's young musicians.
