Hi, we are the City of Sheffield Youth Festival Band, and we are the senior wind band of the Sheffield Music Hub! Our band is open to woodwind, brass and percussion instrument players, who are Grade 5 and above, and also keyboard instrument players who may wish to try tuned percussion, as many of the skills transfer over! Most of the musicians in the band are Y8-Y13, but we also welcome younger players who are Grade 5, too. Everyone has to audition to be in the band, so when a new musician applies to join the group, we can set this up, but it’s quite informal!

Our rehearsals are designed to be fun, but also to work hard and achieve high standards. We often play musical games, or break up into smaller instrument groups, to focus on a certain piece, or section, of music. The music we play is varied; some of it is from famous film scores, and some of it is more traditional band music. The musicians in the band often have their say in what music we choose!

Some of the exciting performances we have been part of include playing at Sheffield’s own Octagon Centre, City Hall, Cathedral and Victoria Hall, but the band also ventures further away, too, taking part in national competitions, as well as summer tours to places like Paris and Liepzig (more coming soon!).

The band is conducted by Liam Power, with Gillian Hume and Iain Teather assisting. We welcome musicians from all over our wonderful city, and we look forward to meeting you soon!
