We are the wonderful Youth Voices Choir, a group of passionate young singers (Y6-Y9) from across the city! We come together each week to sing and learn a variety of different songs (from genres such as musical theatre, classical and pop), develop our musical skills and build confidence. Our rehearsals involve lots of fun warmups which support and develop our musical and singing skills. Each term we work towards a performance – recent highlights include singing with The Sheffield Chorale, Concordia, and Junior Voices at Sheffield Cathedral, and performing in Victoria Hall! Our choir is a close-knit team of friendly and supportive people who share a love of singing. We welcome everyone who shares this passion for singing, all you need to do is bring your vocal chords and come along. Come and take your next exciting steps on your singing journey and get in touch!
We asked some of our young musicians what their favourite things about the group are and this is what they said!
Favourite Song
- I like Somewhere Over the Rainbow as it’s heartwarming and emotive.
- I enjoyed singing We Are The World as I really connected with the words, and I think the words connected with the audience in a good way. I also liked singing a piece by Michael Jackson.
- I really liked the words of I Am A Small Part of the World, and I enjoyed singing it.
Favourite part of rehearsals
- My favourite part of rehearsals is Question of the Day – we start each rehearsal with everyone answering a simple question such as ‘what is your favourite chocolate bar’, ‘what is your favourite song’ or ‘what is your favourite kitchen utensil’... Sometimes they can be funny and it’s nice to hear everyone’s answers (even if they are a bit silly) as we learn a bit more about each other before we start singing together.
- I really enjoy all the singing we do. I’ve enjoyed singing songs from Matilda as well as doing some music by Bach which was a challenge, but I was happy when we performed it really well. We also sing lots of cool high notes!
- I enjoy the fun warmups, especially the tongue twisters!
- We all love the fun jokes that we have in rehearsals, they make me laugh and feel happy.
Favourite Venues
- Our favourite venues have been Sheffield Cathedral and Victoria Hall, we’re excited to perform there again.
The choir rehearses weekly, during term time.
