Hannah Watson - Senior Business Support Officer
I started learning the violin when we got offered free lessons at my primary school aged 7 (those were the days). I took full advantage of all the groups on offer in my local area, Derbyshire, including the local string orchestra and the county youth orchestra. I didn’t go to music college but have always played in an orchestra wherever I have lived, and currently play 2nd violin in Hallam Sinfonia here in Sheffield.
Music education was such an important part of my youth, and gave me so many great opportunities and experiences, that I made sure that all three of my kids learnt to play an instrument. Late in my career I got involved with my old music centre, and became their coordinator, and then moved from history teaching to become head of music at the secondary school where I taught. I am passionate about music education, and in particular promoting high quality music ensemble opportunities for young people within and outside of schools.
As well as working for Sheffield Music Hub, I am Orchestra Director for the City of Sheffield Youth Orchestra, organising three intensive courses and concerts a year during the school holidays.
Some things about me...
- Favourite piece of music – So many! But if I had to choose, one of the songs written by my daughter Hazel (check out Watson&Lockett on Spotify)
- Favourite thing to do outside of work – Cycling or walking in the Peaks
- Favourite food – Cheese and chocolate (but not together)
- Favourite place in Sheffield – Padley Woods (it’s close to Sheffield!) where I grew up and spent many a happy hour
- One thing about me that would surprise you to know – I helped compose and record a ‘Song for the Commonwealth’ with my school choir while working in The Gambia, West Africa, coming 2nd in a Commonwealth wide competition.
