Sheffield Music Hub has a Fourth Wind Band!

We're delighted to be expanding our wind band pathway with the launch of Sheffield Junior Wind Band for young brass, woodwind and percussion players in Years 5 to 8. This exciting new group means Sheffield Music Hub now offers four wind bands, providing opportunities for young musicians from Year 3 right through to Year 13.

The growth of our wind band programme reflects the increasing number of young people making music across Sheffield. The introduction of Sheffield Junior Wind Band strengthens the pathway between Sheffield Children's Wind Band and Sheffield Youth Wind Band, ensuring that young musicians can develop alongside others at a similar stage of their musical journey.

By creating this new step in the pathway, our music leaders can provide more focused musical experiences that are tailored to each age group and level of development. This allows young musicians to progress at the right pace, rather than moving into more advanced groups before they are ready or finding the beginner wind band too easy.

Sheffield Children's Wind Band

Sheffield Children's Wind Band is the starting point of our wind band pathway, welcoming young brass, woodwind and percussion players from Year 3 onwards. The group provides a fun and supportive introduction to group playing, helping members develop listening skills, musical confidence and the foundations of performing as part of a larger band.

This group is ideal for young musicians who are beginning their ensemble journey and looking to enjoy making music with others. We usually say once you can play five notes you are ready to join Children’s Wind Band!

NEW! Sheffield Junior Wind Band

Launching in September 2026, Sheffield Junior Wind Band provides an exciting next step for young musicians in Years 5 to 8. The group bridges the gap between Sheffield Children's Wind Band and Sheffield Youth Wind Band.

Members will build their ensemble skills, expand their musical knowledge and perform a varied repertoire in a supportive and friendly environment. The group is designed to help young musicians gain confidence and progress their group playing.

Sheffield Youth Wind Band

Sheffield Youth Wind Band is designed for more experienced brass, woodwind and percussion players who are ready for increasingly challenging repertoire and performance opportunities.

The group focuses on developing strong group skills, musical expression and technical ability, while giving members the opportunity to perform high-quality wind band music.

City of Sheffield Youth Festival Band

The City of Sheffield Youth Festival Band is one of Sheffield Music Hub's flagship music groups and is the most advanced of our wind bands. The band brings together advanced young musicians from across the city to rehearse and perform ambitious repertoire to a high standard.

Members benefit from challenging musical experiences, exciting performance opportunities, European tours (such as their recent tour to France) and the chance to perform alongside some of Sheffield's most talented young instrumentalists.
