Benjamin Jackson
Instrument: Cello - also Theory and Composition
Benjamin began playing the cello aged 8 and eventually went on to achieve a First Class Honours degree in music from the University of Leeds, and a Distinction in a Master’s degree in Composition from the University of Sheffield. Music education underpinned both; on top of his dissertation project looking into the benefits of extra-curricular musical activities on young people’s development, he also had hands-on experience in the classroom and since as a private tutor and manager of the chamber orchestra in Leeds. He has also composed cello studies for students, designed to teach specific skills.
His extensive orchestral and ensemble experience has taken him to France, Italy, Germany and the Edinburgh Fringe, and he is now a member of Hallam Sinfonia.
In 2018, Benjamin composed and performed a ‘Suite For Solo Cello’ as part of an academic project which looked into the inner-workings of music written especially for the instrument, and in 2022 completed his first String Quartet.
