Junior Organ Scholarships

For keyboard students aged 14-18

Sheffield Cathedral is looking to appoint two students aged 14-18 to be Junior Organ Scholars, starting as soon as possible.

Benefits include:

• Free organ tuition with the Cathedral Organist

• Preparation for conservatoire/ university organ scholarship auditions

• Performance opportunities in the cathedral

• A bursary for purchase of organ music

Whilst prior organ experience is desirable, they are also very interested to hear from pianists at approximately ABRSM Grade 5 standard or above who are keen to start learning the organ.

In an average week, the organ scholar would be expected to be present for cathedral choir services on Tuesday evenings and both the 10:30 Sunday Eucharist and 16:00 Choral Evensong. Sheffield Cathedral would also be prepared to tailor the scholarship around each individual scholar (for example, if they already had a Sunday morning playing commitment at a local parish church).

Sheffield Cathedral would strongly encourage the organ scholar to attend the Sunday organ recital series at the cathedral, beginning in November 2023 and occurring immediately after evensong. For suitable candidates, there may be opportunities to assist with and perform as part of this series.

To apply, please contact James Mitchell, Cathedral Organist and Director of Keyboard Studies.
