We need your help to support the children and young people of Sheffield

Currently, the Sheffield Music Hub bursary programme costs the Friends and Volunteers of Sheffield Music Hub around £7,000 a year. These dedicated individuals work tirelessly to support young people from every corner of the city. But with rising costs and limited resources, the bursary programme is under pressure. If we don’t act now, we will have to start saying no to some children and young people.

At Sheffield Music Hub we believe that every child, regardless of race; gender; where they live; their levels of musical talent; parental income; whether they have special educational needs or disabilities; and whether they are looked-after children; deserve the very best music education. The bursaries are designed to ensure that no child is excluded from music education due to financial hardship, and they support a wide range of learners. Any family receiving Free School MealsUniversal CreditIncome SupportIncome-based Job Seekers Allowance, or Working Tax Credit, or if a child is looked after, will receive a bursary. However, the funding is running low—so we’re doing something about it.

On September 28th, a group of passionate staff members, parents and friends from Sheffield Music Hub are preparing to run the Sheffield 10K—not for medals or personal bests, but for something far more meaningful: the future of music education for children and young people across Sheffield.

We want to see which runner can raise the most money for our bursary programme. You can donate to their JustGiving pages here:

  • Heather Burge - Music Leader and Inclusion Lead
  • Keith Nockels - Parent
  • Ian Naylor – Head of Music Education Sheffield
  • Emma Ward – Music Leader

“We never want to say no to a child who wants to make music,” says Ian Naylor. “Music builds confidence, nurtures talent, and opens doors. Every child deserves that chance.”

For many families, these bursaries are the only way their children can access music education. They help children find their voice, their rhythm, and their confidence. They create safe spaces for expression and growth. And they ensure that no child is left behind simply because of financial hardship.

That’s why this 10K run matters.

Anyone can get involved!

If you’d like to run yourself, please reach out to Sheffield Music Hub at MusicHubProjects@sheffield.gov.uk.

Let’s make sure every child who wants to make music gets the chance.
