Sheffield Music Hub’s New Recital Programme!

During the 2025/26 academic year we piloted a new recital programme, creating exciting performance opportunities for young musicians learning with us across the city.

Over the course of the year, we held our first piano, guitar, woodwind, vocal and strings recitals, giving students the chance to perform solo pieces in front of an audience of family members, teachers and fellow musicians.

While learning an instrument can often be a personal journey, it should never take place in isolation. Performing too other people, making music with others, and being part of a musical community can significantly accelerate musical development and is one of the most rewarding parts of being a musician. For many young people at the start of their musical journey, recital performances may be their first opportunity to play in front of an audience.

Our recital programme provides a supportive and encouraging environment where young musicians can share what they have been working on, celebrate their progress and build confidence performing in front of others. It also gives our more experienced musicians an opportunity to further develop their performance skills and stage presence.

By listening to their peers, students are inspired by other people's playing and often pick up new musical ideas and techniques to incorporate into their own performances. Younger musicians particularly benefit from hearing more advanced players, helping them to see what they could achieve in the years ahead and encouraging them to continue developing their skills.

Since the programme began, it has been a huge success. Teachers have reported increased enthusiasm and motivation following each event, with many students leaving feeling inspired to practise more and work towards future performances. For some young people, the recitals have provided their very first experience of performing solo in front of an audience, while for others they have been an opportunity to refine and develop their performance skills.

Following such a successful first year, we are delighted to be expanding the recital programme for 2026/27, with even more opportunities for young musicians to perform!

Autumn Term

• GCSE & A-Level Recital – Friday 16 October
• Vocal Recital – Thursday 22 October
• Brass Recital – Thursday 12 November
• Young Sounds Recital – Friday 27 November

The Young Sounds Recital will feature children taking part in the Young Sounds Connect Programme, which supports young musicians from lower-income families to continue their musical learning after state funded whole-class lessons have ended. The programme provides free access to instrumental tuition, musical experiences and additional support to help young people continue progressing on their musical journey.

Spring Term

• Guitar Recital – Thursday 4 March

Summer Term

• Strings Recital – Friday 21 May (Sheffield Town Hall)
• Piano Recital – Wednesday 21 July 2027 (Sheffield Town Hall)

As the programme continues to grow, we look forward to seeing even more young musicians performing. These recitals are becoming an important part of musical life at Sheffield Music Hub and provide brilliant opportunities for young people to build confidence, develop their musicianship and share their progress with friends, family and fellow musicians.
