ITV Calendar News feature: Connecting Young People with Live Music

Published on 09/06/2026

New research from Playground Proms shows that around 2 million children in the UK are missing out on live music, with cost and travel identified as the biggest barriers.

Not in Sheffield! We are working hard to change that and at Sheffield Music Hub, our focus is simple: We believe that every child, regardless of race; gender; where they live; their levels of musical talent; parental income; whether they have special educational needs or disabilities; and whether they are looked-after children; deserves the very best music education.

A big thank you to ITV Calendar for inviting Ian Naylor, Head of Music Education to speak about this and helping shine a light on the importance of access to live music for young people. We are proud of what we are building in Sheffield, but there is still more to do. You can watch Ian’s Interview here (starts at 14:50)

By bringing live music directly into schools, events and communities, together with our partners we have already supported over 18,000 pupils across the city to experience live performances this academic year. For many, it is the first time they have heard a live orchestra, band or professional musician up close.

That first experience can be powerful and "Hearing a live musician for the first time can be really transformational for a young person. But where it makes a real difference is when they can then explore what music means to them”.

That is why we go further, creating clear pathways for young people to:

  • learn an instrument
  • join music groups and choirs
  • explore music production at Red Tape
  • perform in real venues across the city (we promote over 50 gigs a year)
  • access subsidised and targeted provision to help those with the greatest barriers progress.

It isn’t just about watching music, it is about giving every young person the chance to be part of it. Big shout out to our partners for making this happen: English Touring Opera, Hallé Concerts Society, Concerteenies, Music in the Round, Sheffield Cathedral: A Place for All People, #TRACKS
